![]() While I’m not a huge fan of the text-based delivery of game dialogue, backed only with a slightly animated character, I soon forgot about all of that and sat for hours reading this epic. Quite honestly, I found myself enthralled from start to finish. Rook leaves with hundreds of refugees in tow and becomes the impromptu leader of the caravan, ultimately responsible for their safety and security.Īs the game progresses, the two stories become more intertwined and what follows is a tale so full of twists and turns that to go much further would spoil the whole thing for you. ![]() Meanwhile in the east, Rook and his daughter Alette are caught up in the invasion and flee their homes in search of safety. Ubin and his group begin to head north to the Varl capital to bring news of this invasion and secure the borders for war. The Dredge, a race of armoured warriors created by a jealous god, return in the north and sweep south killing anything in their path. Heading north to the Varl capital, Ubin is joined the future Varl king and the prince of men as part of diplomatic mission when all hell breaks loose. Rushing to his aid, you are introduced to the combat system as you rescue the governor and set his house in order. Reaching the city, things take a turn for the worse as the governor is caught up in an attempted coup. The game begins as Ubin, the king’s tax collector and one of the oldest remaining Varl, travels to the town of Strand with his caravan of warriors. The player finds themselves travelling across a fictional land gathering human and Varl allies – a race of giants – in order to survive. Described as the first part of a trilogy, the game is a beautifully hand-drawn turn-based strategy with a pinch of RPG that follows a wide cast of characters as they are caught up in what they suspect is the third Great War. This is the world you will be thrown in to in Stoic Studios debut game The Banner Saga. People are going to die and there is nothing you can do. You’ve been travelling for days without rest, six days from the next town with only four days of supplies. It’s snowing it’s always snowing, and you lead a caravan of two hundred refugees away from an unstoppable army of armoured giants. The sun is fixed in the sky and, for what you think might have been days, the world has sat in perpetual twilight. Windows PC, Mac OS X, Linux, iOS, PlayStation 3 (PSN), Xbox 360 (XBLA)

Noise filtering: On the more expensive surge protectors we’ve tested, noise filtration is a common “premium” feature that reduces electromagnetic or radio-frequency interference, which could cause data loss or audio/video disruptions in your connected devices. We considered well-designed clamps, hooks, or holes for mounting the surge protector on a table or baseboard to be a bonus. And we didn’t want something overly heavy or bulky that would look out of place in a room. ![]() Sensible port layout and overall design: To keep oversize plugs from blocking nearby outlets, we wanted the surge protector’s ports to be adequately spaced.(We explain in the Care and maintenance section why you shouldn’t plug a surge protector into an extension cord.) This makes it more convenient to use and safer. Long power cord: If a surge protector has a power cord, the longer, the better.Keep in mind that a warranty covers only defects in materials or construction and won’t help you when the surge components wear out as designed-and even a lifetime warranty doesn’t last forever. At least a one-year warranty: A one-year warranty is a bare-minimum requirement for something that you’re trusting to protect equipment costing tens or hundreds of dollars and that you’ll be replacing every few years regardless. We dismissed any nightstand or light-duty contender without at least one USB-A port with 2 amps or more. Convenient auxiliary ports: We preferred (but did not require) our picks to have telephone ports for the significant percentage of people in the US who have a landline phone or a dial-up internet connection-about 37% and 0.6% of the population, respectively. But you never get to see the meter itself, and how long the surge protector will last is just an estimate, so we didn’t put a lot of stock in the rating. High joule ratings: A joule rating tells you about how much energy the surge protector can absorb before it fails-in a video game, the joule rating would be the health meter-so, the higher the better.Lower is better when it comes to let-through voltage, the measure of how much extra voltage reaches your electronics. A surge protection rating of 400 volts or better: Although we verified each model’s abilities in our own electrical testing, we required that they be rated by one of the major product-safety corporations, UL or ETL, to bring a surge down to (at most) 400 volts, giving preference to models that earned a lower, 330-volt rating. At least eight AC outlets for living room or office use: We required at least eight AC outlets for the main, runner-up, and top-of-the-line contenders, at least four for the nightstand contenders, and one to four for our light-duty pick.Otherwise, we required, at minimum, an indicator light that will notify you when items plugged into the unit are no longer protected against surges. Automatic shutoff when the surge protector wears out: We preferred that the surge protector have an auto-shutoff feature so that it never leaves your equipment inadvertently unprotected. We’d choose the SK30USB for protecting a few small household appliances-say, an essential oil diffuser, a Nintendo Switch dock, and a coffee grinder-and a couple of smartphones, or even for tossing in a carry-on when we’re traveling. In contrast to many comparable models, its compact size, grounded (three-prong) plug, and optional screw in the center of the unit help keep it firmly attached to the wall outlet, which is important for preventing electrical fires or shocks. It performs well compared with other small options we’ve tested, blocking almost as many volts as larger models. In addition to the three AC outlets, it comes equipped with two USB ports that offer a combined 2.1 amps to charge a phone, a tablet, or a couple of low-power devices. It has an auto-shutoff mechanism, making it one of the few three-outlet options we’ve found that will disconnect the power when the surge protection wears out. In One Night Stand, explore the unknown bedroom and seek out clues to identify who the stranger is and what happened to bring you both together. The Tripp Lite Protect It 3-Outlet Surge Protector SK30USB offers the portability of our favorite small power strips for travel but with even more protection. After a night of fun, passion, and one too many drinks, you wake up the next morning to find a complete stranger lying naked beside you in bed. ![]() So I cannot use MailSuite, nor disable GPG. Recommended background: You should have at least one year programming experience. write programs that effectively use parallel collections to achieve performance competently microbenchmark parallel code, express common algorithms in a functional style and solve them in parallel, reason about task and data parallel programs, By the end of this course you will be able to: Throughout, we'll apply these concepts through several hands-on examples that analyze real-world data, such as popular algorithms like k-means clustering. We'll start the nuts and bolts how to effectively parallelize familiar collections operations, and we'll build up to parallel collections, a production-ready data parallel collections library available in the Scala standard library. In particular, you'll see how many familiar ideas from functional programming map perfectly to to the data parallel paradigm. In this course, you'll learn the fundamentals of parallel programming, from task parallelism to data parallelism. ![]() With every smartphone and computer now boasting multiple processors, the use of functional ideas to facilitate parallel programming is becoming increasingly widespread. This course is intended to be taken after Functional Programming Principles in Scala. You should have some familiarity with using the command line. Proficiency with Java or C# is ideal, but experience with other languages such as C/C++, Python, Javascript or Ruby is also sufficient. We will also look at purely functional alternatives to mutable state, using infinite data structures or functional reactive programming. We will explore the consequences of combining functions and state. Several parts of this course deal with the question how functional programming interacts with mutable state. Finally, you will learn how to leverage the ability of the compiler to infer values from types. You’ll also learn some best practices on how to write good Scala code in the real world. We'll work on larger and more involved examples, from state space exploration to random testing to discrete circuit simulators. You'll get to know important new functional programming concepts, from lazy evaluation to structuring your libraries using monads. In this course you will learn how to apply the functional programming style in the design of larger Scala applications. Last, you should have some familiarity with using the command line. The more unpredictable the result of hurling oneself into a car crash or a ditch is, the funnier it is likely to be found. I would argue that the sudden loss of control, often experienced by players of video games as frustrating, can be considered laughable when observed from the position of a spectator. The player drive the character into a hazardous situation and… observes the outcome. A similar recurring theme is to be found in funny game videos. Suddenly, it is laws of physics and the machinery what’s moving him around. We could add that he is no longer in control of his body. The example he gives is that of the waterfall scene in “Our Hospitality” (see 1:07:00).įollowing the Bergsonian explanation of humor as the mechanical, Gunning points out that after swinging on a rope to save his girl, Keaton’s characters becomes a marionette. He describes Keaton’s fascination with “how things work”, with mechanical devices and the effects they can produce. He analyzes the silent comedy’s fascination with crazy machines and technology on the case of Buster Keaton movies. We could go on to discuss how the idea of a gag versus narrative relates to the emergence versus progression or paidia versus ludus dichotomies.Īnother inspiring concept introduced by Gunning is that of the “mischief device”. That is nevertheless the way many players use it. GTA is not advertised as a car crash simulation. However, they constitute a considerable portion of gameplay, especially in open-world games such as the Grand Theft Auto series. They are also often described by their makers as “silly”, “random” or “junk”. Likewise, the stunts and comical situations that players experience or stage, capture and share have usually nothing to do with the main narrative thrust of the game. Many film scholars, including Gunning and Jenkins, have pointed out that a gag - a joke form - disrupts a narrative. However, the possible application of early cinema studies to our case and games and general runs even deeper. ![]() Like the cinema of attractions, they too rely on spectacle and humor. Instead of telling stories, they show off what can be done in the virtual worlds. Within the contemporary “machinima” production, these videos occupy a space is similar to the one cinema of attractions did in the early history of film. The same approach could be applied to the funny video montages I am studying for my project. Gunning argues that this vision of the medium preceded the one of “narrative cinema”. The Lumiere brothers output did not primarily attempt to tell a story - it demonstrated what their technology was capable of, focusing on the power of the medium to display. Concepts developed by the film historian and theorist Tom Gunning are especially interesting as they focus on the interplay of the medium and the performance of humor.įirst of all, he describes much of the early films as “cinema of attractions”. However, a substantial body of medium-specific and technology-aware work on humor does exist in the realm of early cinema. Humor scholar tend to be biased to a certain medium - be it theatre for Bergson or jokes for Freud - without explicitly acknowledging its specifics. For most humor scholars (and there are quite a few), humor is something so natural and homogeneous that it doesn’t really matter if a joke is told at a bar, on TV or played out as a sketch. When I started studying physical humor in virtual spaces, I was shocked by how little has been written about the role of mediation in humor. # Funny video game montages, “cinema of attractions” and the “mischief devices” Going on until November 24th, you can receive nearly 70% off on a three-thermal bundle. Linear relationships were established between soil available P and cumulative P budgets obtained under MP or 0 kg P ha −1 under CT. The N and P fertilization increased the availability of these nutrients, but had no significant effect on the soil microbial biomass, activity, and structure. ![]() However, soil N 2O emissions were not affected by tillage. The MP practice resulted in greater organic C content deeper, near the bottom of the plow layer, which promoted soil microbial activity at that depth. Results obtained 12 to 20 yr after initiation of the study indicated that CT enhanced organic C accumulation, NO 3-N, P and K availability, microbial biomass and activity, and microbial community structure in the upper soil layer, likely due to leaving crop residues at the soil surface. Soil tillage was performed every year while synthetic fertilizers were applied only to the corn. A long-term field experiment was initiated in 1992 at L'Acadie in southern Quebec on a clay loam soil to evaluate the effect of tillage, synthetic N fertilization (0, 80, and 160 kg N ha −1) and synthetic P fertilization (0, 17.5, and 35 kg P ha −1) on soil functioning and grain yields of a corn–soybean rotation. Adoption of conservation practices can induce beneficial changes to soil properties and related crop yields in which magnitude varies according to soil and climatic conditions but usually increases with time. Long-term tillage and synthetic fertilization affect soil functioning and crop yields in a corn–soybean rotation in eastern Canada. ![]() A., Gagnon, B., Lalande, R., Morel, C., Rochette, P.
